Health and Safety Officer

Reports to: Group OHS Practitioner and HR Manager
Purpose: The OHS Officer develops, implements, coordinates and evaluates H and S management policies, programmes, and systems, trains employees in occupational health and safety procedures, monitors and audits the workplace, and records and investigates incidents, and identify hazards to ensure safe and healthy working conditions. Furthermore, the OHS Officer will have to put appropriate safety controls in place, and provides advice on accident prevention and occupational health to management and employees.
Qualifications and skills
Suitable candidates must possess the following minimum qualifications and skills:
- Grade 12
- BTEC higher national certificate or degree or diploma in safety management
- MS Office (especially Outlook, Word & Excel);MS support qualification
- Registered under (SAIOSH or IOSH) and SACPCMP registration as a safety officer (for construction work purposes)
- Added benefit if certified as fall protection planners
- Valid unendorsed code 08 drivers license
- At least 3 years' experience as a health and safety officer specifically in the construction setting
- Experience with contractor management. 37(2) agreements and auditing is essential.
- Knowledge of hazard identification and risk assessment and incident reporting and investigation and auditing and inspection.
- Excellent writing, documenting and communication skills in English
- Presentable to our clients and contractors

- Excellent problem solving skills
- Able to work independently and able to work as part of a team
- Enforcing housekeeping at the workplace
- An excellent understanding of the OHS act, supporting regulations and standards, with the ability to implement and apply such requirements.
The successful candidate’s responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Ensure compliance with relevant H and S legislation
- Promote occupational health and safety within the organisation and develop safer and healthier ways of working;
- Developing, implementing and improving the H&S plans, programmes and procedures in the workplace
- Conduct regular site inspections to check that policies and procedures are being properly implemented, documenting findings and making recommendations and/or changes to working practices to increase safety and compliance with legislation
- Conduct risk assessments
- Make sure that personal protective equipment is being used in workplaces according to regulations
- Make sure that the organisation is aware of, and complies with, all legislation in relation to the use of its plant, equipment and substances, as well as in all workplace activities
- Conduct investigations of accidents and unsafe working conditions, study possible causes and recommend remedial action;
- Identify OHS-related training needs in the workplace
- Conduct training sessions for management, supervisors and workers on health and safety practices and legislation;
- Assist with the rehabilitation of workers after accidents or injuries and make sure they experience a satisfactory return to work;
- Coordinate emergency procedures, firefighting and first aid crews;
- Communicate frequently with management to report on the status of the occupational health and safety program;
- Conduct breathalyser testing and compliance checks
- Complete and submit monthly OHS reports
- Register all IOD’s with the workmen’s compensation consultants and ensure adequate and timeous finalization of same.
- Any other health and safety contractual requirements
- Drive sustainability and corporate social responsibility (ESG) initiatives and targets and prepare ESG reports for submission.
- Take on the role of employee wellness and resilience to enable the company to achieve their strategic objectives through employee wellness initiatives and encourage work-life balance.
- Prepare and post relevant H and S communications, as and when needed.
