    Idols competition

"I have a huge gripe with the Idols competition going on at the moment. It is the most blatant display of racism that I have ever seen."

I ABSOLUTELY REFUSE TO WATCH IT. After the first two rounds of elimination there were complaints that it was racist because only white contestants were put through. It seems the producers and judges were being pressurised into having more faces of colour. I have no problem if a person of colour goes through if they have the talent, but to put them through only on the basis of “affirmative action” is just plain silly.

They expect the public to support the new “Idol”, but take away our voting rights. This year the public’s vote only counts for 60% and the judges have a 40% vote. They could just as well change the name of the competition to Pop Stars. Even if a contestant gets 60% of the voting public (which is as much as he can get) the judges get the final say. How is that empowering the public to choose their own Idol?

When Pop Stars announced their winners, nothing was said that there was not one white face!!!! But the moment there are too little coloured faces eyebrows are raised. Is that fair? The public will vote for their favourite and make them feel proud of picking the person and buy their albums. Is that not the goal of the competition? It was reported in the Sunday Times that Franshesca withdrew because they asked her whether she was white or coloured. Why would that be relevant??? Can she sing? Yes! Does she look like an Idol? Yes!!! When you are interviewed for a job, employment equity states that you cannot ask questions like, what race you are, whether you smoke, whether you have dependants or even any questions about your spouse/partner. Effectively the Idols competition is a job interview which is broadcast. Why are these kinds of questions asked? I use to watch Idols religiously, but now you can forget it, I refuse to watch it. They might as well move it to SABC 1 because it has become a second Pop Stars. It saddens me because I wish all of the contestants the best of luck, but it looks like they will need more than that.
