Rape of journalist condemned
The Forum of Community Journalists wishes to condemn in the strongest possible terms the recent rape of fellow journalist and editor of the Midrand Reporter, Elmarie van Rensburg. "While rape under any circumstances is abhorrent, we are further appalled by the fact that the alleged rapist was on bail for a previous rape at the time of the crime.
"We sympathise with Elmarie's view that the justice system has failed her and urge that the powers that be take strong note of this and take firm action to ensure there is no repetition. Our hearts go out to Elmarie and her family at this trying time in their lives.
"We are amazed by the courage she has shown in going public on this very sensitive matter, motivated by a need to strike a blow against this scourge. She can rest assured that she has the support of the Forum as she deals with this trauma."
The case against Elmarie's alleged rapist will come before the court on June 30 at the Wynberg Sexual Offenses Court.
