Few African national carriers afford to buy new aircraft which could cost more than one hundred million dollars. This led many private carriers to buy aging aircraft which are not airworthy.
Some even buy Soviet military era aircraft, the Antonov, which end up by crash-landing, at times in crowded cities. The aircraft are named as the flying coffins of Africa. This problem is often noted in countries like DRC, Nigeria, Angola, and Sudan. The whole problem boils down to finance.
