Zuma testified, and had a bit of a meltdown, at the State Capture Inquiry, thus taking some of the shine away from Nelson Mandela International Day.

    South Africa said 'hamba kahle' to Johnny Clegg, a musical hero who truly captured the essence of the rainbow nation. In other appenings, the FaceApp has captured the attention of social media users all over with most of them sharing their aged selves - though the app's terms of use seem dodgy.

    Former finance minister Pravin Gordhan's battle with the Public Protector is still making headlines. In sporting news, tennis was the flavour-of-the-week as the 2019 Wimbledon tournament drew to close. The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) was deployed to the Cape Flats to clear up the ongoing gang violence in the area.

    Former Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs striker Marc Batchelor was allegedly assassinated. And another sporting hero, former Springbok James Small's death and subsequent rumours of a sordid end left social media astonished.
