AfricaCom 2012 - reaching for growth - 19 Nov 2012

[Evan-Lee Courie @evan1985] Approximately 8 000 people from 112 countries and 250 companies representing Africa's growing ICT industry last week gathered at AfricaCom 2012 which took place in Cape Town, South Africa. Under the theme 'Reaching the Next Frontier for Growth', the conference featured several sessions where a range of key speakers, representing the spectrum of Africa's ICT sector, presented. There were several sub-themes serving as hot topics at this year's event, with a particular focus on data analytics, mobility, innovation and connectivity to the development of commerce on the continent. Day 1: Africa Industry Outlook was led by Informa Telecoms & Media's analyst team and gave an overview of new revenue opportunities in the African digital market. read more

Get digital at AfricaCom 2012 - 5 Nov 2012

[Evan-Lee Courie @evan1985] AfricaCom, reportedly the largest communications conference and exhibition on the continent with the gathering of over 5 000 telecoms decision-makers and key players, takes place next week from 13-15 November 2012 in Cape Town, South Africa. Under the theme 'Reaching the Next Frontier for Growth', the three-day conference will focus on the future of digital in Africa. In addition to AfricaCom 2012, a brand new session will promote the importance of ICT start-ups across the continent: the Entrepreneurs Incubator Hub will bring together investors, incubators and entrepreneurs to discuss the best strategies to promote start-ups in Africa's telecommunications, media and ICT sector. read more

Happy Independence Day Uganda! - 8 Oct 2012

[Evan-Lee Courie @evan1985] Tomorrow, 9 October 2012, Uganda celebrates 50 years of gaining its independence from Britain in 1962, maintaining its Commonwealth membership. I'm pretty sure that there will be many celebrations across the country. Last week, media owners and managers in Uganda were asked to popularise the national anthem on a daily basis in the run up to mark Uganda's golden jubilee independence anniversary, However, it appears that radio and television stations failed to do so. read more

Highway Africa kicks off! - 10 Sep 2012

[Evan-Lee Courie @evan1985] The 16th edition of the Highway Africa Conference, an annual gathering of African journalists and communications experts, kicked off yesterday, 9 September 2012, at Rhodes University in Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. Hundreds of media professionals, academics and activists have gathered to take part in the discussions around the theme "Africa Rising? How the media frame the continent's geopolitics, trade and economic growth". Unfortunately I was unable to attend this year's conference, but I've been keeping up to date by following the hashtag #HAGFMD2012 on Twitter. read more
