No more ads for Morgan - 29 Jul 2013

[Ilse van den Berg, @Biz_Africa] Less than a week before the crucial elections in Zimbabwe on 31 July 2013, it was reported that the state-owned Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) have refused to air two campaign ads with electoral messages from Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai and his wife. The reason supposedly being that "the messages were too powerful" and would be difficult for ZANU-PF to match them. read more

eLearning Africa 2013 happens this week - 27 May 2013

[Evan-Lee Courie, @evan1985] Now in its eighth year, eLearning Africa will one again bring together a wide range of perspectives on ICT for development, education and training and takes place in Windhoek, Namibia, starting on Wednesday, 29 May and running until Friday, 31 May 2013 - under the theme 'Policy and Innovation in Education in Africa'. Tradition, Change and Innovation are the overall themes for eLearning Africa 2013, but the main focus of the conversations that will take place is on local innovation in education, on tablets, mobiles and MOOCs; on healthcare delivery and on livelihoods and agriculture, especially for rural communities. This year our focus will be on innovation and we are all really proud that some of the most exciting and innovative new solutions in education have been pioneered and developed in Africa - Rebecca Stromeyer, founder of eLearning Africa and executive director of organisers, ICWE. A team from the South African College of Business will be attending and we're expecting to publish the latest updates with all the happenings from the conference - so if this is your interest, you know where to come. The media blackout in Liberia - 13 May 2013

[Evan-Lee Courie, @evan1985] It's been reported that newspapers in Liberia have printed black front pages after a government official was accused of threatening journalists, this is merely a week after World Press Freedom Day [3 May 2013]. A director of the presidential security service is said to have told a journalist to "Be careful, because you have your pens and we have our guns." Following a mass meeting on Thursday, 9 May, the Press Union of Liberia (PUL) has taken certain measures in response to the Executive Protection Services threats. read more
