Triple Eight puts women’s sports at the heart of brand growth

As South Africa celebrates Women’s Month, integrated marketing agency Triple Eight is marking its 14th year in business with the official launch of Triple Eight Sports Marketing, a specialist division created to help brands unlock greater commercial and consumer value from sport.

The new division brings together Triple Eight’s experience across strategy, creativity, experiential, PR, influencer marketing, digital and content to build sports partnerships that go beyond traditional sponsorship visibility and create deeper connections between brands, fans, players and sporting communities.

Sport occupies a powerful place in South African culture. It drives conversation, influences behaviour and creates some of the strongest emotional connections between people, communities and brands.

For marketers, that makes sport an increasingly valuable platform for building relevance, participation and long-term brand growth.

At the same time, one of the most exciting opportunities is emerging in women’s sport, where growing audiences, increased investment and greater cultural visibility are creating new commercial possibilities for brands.

Triple Eight believes unlocking that opportunity requires a different approach.

“We believe the next era of sports marketing is about moving beyond simply placing a logo on a jersey,” says Sarika Modi, founder and chief creative strategist at Triple Eight. “The opportunity is to understand the role a brand can credibly play in the lives of athletes and fans and then build a platform around that which creates genuine value for the brand, the sport and its community.”

A different model for women’s sport

Triple Eight believes women’s sport should not simply be approached as an extension of men’s sport.

Its audiences, communities, cultural context and commercial opportunities are different — and brands that understand those distinctions can create partnerships that are both more meaningful and more effective.

This thinking is already evident in Triple Eight’s partnership with Stayfree and Banyana Banyana, where the agency has built an integrated sports platform spanning sponsorship, PR, fan participation, experiential activation, influencer marketing and digital storytelling.

At the heart of the partnership is Stayfree Goals4Pads — an initiative through which every goal scored by Banyana Banyana unlocks 1,000 packs of sanitary pads for nominated grassroots women’s and girls’ sporting communities.

Rather than positioning the brand alongside women’s sport purely through sponsorship visibility, the platform connects Stayfree directly to an issue that can affect girls’ participation and performance in sport.

Players, supporters and consumers are also invited to nominate deserving sporting communities, extending the partnership beyond the national team and creating participation across the wider women’s sporting ecosystem.

“Women’s sport represents an extraordinary opportunity for brands, but simply applying the old sponsorship model to a new audience misses much of its potential,” says Modi. “Brands — particularly those whose products are relevant to women — can play a far more valuable role. When you connect a genuine consumer need with the sporting experience, you can create something that delivers impact for the community while also building stronger brand relevance, engagement and commercial value.”

Built on established sports marketing experience

While women’s sport is an important area of focus for the new division, Triple Eight’s sports marketing experience extends across the broader sporting landscape.

The agency began building its credentials through campaigns including Unilever’s Shield Freshness Zone, which included the Shield Heat Wave, a fan-powered motion experience, as well as the influencer-led Voices of Football platform and the iDiski Fan-shion campaign.

Across campaigns involving both Bafana Bafana and Banyana Banyana, Triple Eight has explored how brands can move from being passive sponsors to active participants in fan culture.

That philosophy now forms the foundation of Triple Eight Sports Marketing.

The division is built around four shifts in the way brands approach sport:

  • From sponsorships to strategic partnerships that create long-term value for both the brand and the sporting ecosystem.
  • From visibility to measurable business outcomes, connecting sports investment more directly to brand and commercial objectives.
  • From audiences to active fan participation, creating experiences people can engage with, share and influence.
  • From isolated campaigns to connected ecosystems, bringing together sponsorship, PR, experiential, digital, influencers and content around one strategic platform.

Turning sports investment into business value

Triple Eight Sports Marketing will work with brands at every stage of their sports marketing journey — from identifying the right sporting property or partnership opportunity, through to strategy, creative development, activation and amplification.

The agency’s approach starts not with sponsorship inventory, but with a business question: What role can this brand credibly play within this sporting community, and how can that role create value?

“Our ambition is to help brands extract far more value from their investment in sport,” says Modi. “The strongest sports partnerships should build fandom, create conversation, strengthen brand equity and ultimately contribute to business growth. That requires far more than sponsorship. It requires strategy, creativity and a deep understanding of how people experience sport.”

As Triple Eight celebrates 14 years, the launch of Triple Eight Sports Marketing represents the next evolution of the agency’s integrated offering and an opportunity to bring its combination of creativity, consumer insight and integrated execution to a growing category of brand investment.

For brands, the proposition is simple: don’t just sponsor the game. Find a meaningful role within it.
