Whitey Basson, arguably SA's greatest retailer, has announced that at the end of this year he would retire from the helm at Shoprite, which he built into an African grocery colossus. He says he is weary and 'gatvol'. The news was somehow not a surprise and it seems clear he is stepping aside in the face of longtime associate Christo Wiese's determination to merge Shoprite with furniture retailer Steinhoff. 4 Nov 2016

Department chain Stuttafords has voluntarily submitted itself for business rescue proceedings, it emerged at the weekend. The embattled company has eight department stores and 15 monobrand stores across SA. 31 Oct 2016

News earlier this week that Edcon would now belong to its creditors, after a debt-to-equity transaction, has been met with muted applause by analysts.
