GE scoops awards at the Transport Africa Awards

General Electric Transportation, a unit of General Electric Company, was the recipient of two awards at the recent Transport Africa Awards dinner held at the Sandton Sun Hotel in Johannesburg, South Africa, recognising the company's contribution to the African transport sector.

GE executive Gorman Zimba, received the Transport Supplier of the Year Award on behalf of the company for GE's work in supplying Transnet with 143 diesel-electric locomotives and delivering world class locomotives to Africa.

The Transnet deal also marked a historic milestone of producing locomotives for Africa in Africa for the very first time in the history of the continent, resulting in Africa being able to trade within Africa to procure world class locomotives thereby strengthening the continent's position as a fast growing emerging market.

"GE's commitment to the sustainability of the environment by providing the South African transportation industry with locomotives that reduce the amount of harmful greenhouse gasses and innovative technology such as Trip Optimizer, that lessen fuel and emissions from locomotives to promote a sustainable environment for South Africa, was acknowledged by winning the Transport Green Supplier of the Year Award," said GE sales leader Zeenith Ebrahim.

Speaking after the dinner, president and CEO for GE in Southern Africa, Tim Schweikert said "We are honoured to accept both the award for the Transport Supplier of the Year as well as the Transport Green Supplier of the Year and proud to share them with our key stakeholders, who have been instrumental in allowing us to win these awards, by assisting us in creating the highest quality locomotives that are now operating on the South African rail network."
