Tragedy strikes WHO Africa: Leadership transition uncertain

Ndugulile was elected to the position of WHO Regional Director for Africa in August during the annual meeting of African health ministers in Brazzaville. The role carries a renewable five-year term.

He was slated to assume the position in February 2025, succeeding Matshidiso Moeti, who has served two consecutive terms in the role.
A seasoned Tanzanian politician, Ndugulile was also the Member of Parliament for Kigamboni and had served in various government roles, including Deputy Minister for Health and the first Minister for Communication and ICT in Tanzania.
His passing was mourned by Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan and the Speaker of the National Assembly, Tulia Ackson, who highlighted his significant contributions to public health and governance.
She extended her condolences to his family, Members of the Parliament, Kigamboni residents as well as friends and relatives.
Funeral arrangements are being co-ordinated in collaboration with Ndugulile's family.
