The Dogstar Awards are one of the highlights of the commercials production calendar, and organised by Gecko Communications and Screen Africa. The competition is divided into two sections: the overseas market for international clients and agencies (the Made By SA category) and the local market (the Made For SA Category). Big winners of the night were: "Fork", Best Overall, winner of the Canis Major Award (Made For SA), the imaginative fairytale-like ad made for Investec Private Bank by Surburban Films and directed by Miles Goodall, who also picked up best director for "Fork" as well as for "Old Man", Aides in the Made By Category.
The winner of the Canis Major in the international category (Made By SA) was "Milk Truck", made for the Discovery Channel, which surprised viewers with a spectacular turning over of a milk truck in the centre of Cape Town (Asylum Films, SA production house, Hungryman USA, international production house).
Other winners on the night were the recipients of the Rising Star Award, given to previously disadvantaged juniors that showed exceptional potential and track records. Two winners were announced in this category, Heikki Noshongo (nominated by Unit Afrika Crew) and Douglas Machogo (nominated by Velocity Afrika).
Scott Njumbuxa (nominated by Picture Tree) was given a special acknowledgement as someone with exceptional potential.
The Commercials Producers Association awarded the Guide Dog Award to Kevin O'Reilly, recognising him for his excellent contribution to transformation in the industry. The Gaffer of the Year, voted for by directors of photography, was Ric Millington.
Julie Coghlan, one of the organisers said, "What makes the Dogstars exceptional is that it is recognition by the industry itself of the people that sweat behind the scenes, all of whom are dedicated to their craft and world class. We were delighted with the entries from such a wide range of production houses and agencies both local and international. This shows the tremendous standards of the South African film industry, and its contribution to economic and cultural life in the country."
