Solar table charges customer's cellphone, tablet

The Solaris Solar Table is a unique concept that allows guests to solar charge their cellphones and tablets whilst enjoying a meal or beverage on the terrace of Winchester Mansions in Sea Point.

An initiative of Lumi?re Technologies, the table combines the latest in PV Solar, lithium-ion technology in a compact robust table frame. The tabletop is made from toughened glass for extra safety and durability and captures sunlight energy that is stored for power-on-demand top up of smart phones and tablet devices. Other low power DC devices eg Wi-Fi repeaters, can also be powered by the lithium-ion battery backup located inside the table.

Says Winchester Mansions' MD, Nils Heckscher, whose lust for gadgets is widely known, "We are piloting this to see whether there is a benefit for such an invention. It certainly fits in with our efforts to be more energy savvy. The hotel is committed to the environment and is thus receptive to these concepts.

"Our greening encompasses all aspects of what we do at the hotel, from recycling up to 65% of our waste, installing energy efficient equipment, reducing our water consumption by installing efficient shower heads, green procurement of recycled and biodegradable materials and our involvement in greening and community initiatives such as Y-Waste Project, The Noah Soap Project and Nosithembele Training Academy."

Hotel guests are encouraged to provide their feedback on the Solaris Solar Table by filling in a basic questionnaire that will qualify them to be entered into a draw to win one food and beverage vouchers at the bar.
