38th UP Expert Lecture presented by Professor Lyn-Marié Birkholtz
Breaking barriers to malaria elimination: Transdisciplinary research in action to deliver health innovations against malaria.
This lecture will argue that malaria elimination is both an urgent imperative and a blueprint for health security. To do this, we have to draw on transdisciplinary research that targets all the entities contributing to this complex disease – humans, mosquito vectors and the disease-causing parasite itself. The lecture will showcase innovations that illuminate parasite vulnerabilities and highlight strategies by which this fundamental understanding of the disease mechanism is translated into research for impact – delivering the next generation of antimalarials to finally break the barrier to malaria elimination.
