A health check reminder this Mental Health Month
In today's world, everyone is busy. So busy, in fact, that it can cause us to lose ourselves. We obsess over being better, faster, or stronger that we forget about our wellbeing. We stop taking care of ourselves and our bodies because we believe that we don't have time for it. Our bodies aren't designed to be in this constant state of alarm. We are designed to fight or flight, and then recover. The modern world doesn't appear to allow us that recovery time, and this creates a vicious circle. The more stressed we are, the less time we have to care for ourselves. The less time we have to care for ourselves, the more stressed we become. 14 Oct 2022 Read more

Balancing on the tightrope across the digital divide - what we can learn from the publication of matric results
How would you feel if your matric or student results were published on a public platform, including your name and surname? For many, feelings that may come to mind are "exposed" or "vulnerable". If the Department of Basic Education (DBE) intended to publish matric results with names, it would have flown in the face of matriculants' right to privacy. Deciding not to publish the results, however, fails to bear in mind that the right to privacy must always be balanced with other rights, in this case the right of access to information. 26 Jan 2022 Read more

Defining what we mean by 'quality' in education is difficult and what one person thinks is essential to good quality provision may not be as important to another. Consider, for example, 'traditional' versus 'cutting-edge', or 'academic' versus 'work-oriented'. And while most of us feel that we will recognise good or poor quality 'when we see it' the fact is that whether we are students, parents, academics, employers or regulators we all need something firmer than a vague sense of what quality is when we're facing a decision about a programme or an institution. 9 Jun 2011 Read more

The recent release of the matric results signalled the start of the 2011 academic year in South Africa. The newspapers contain pictures of long queues of students trying, mostly unsuccessfully, to gain entry into 'select' universities in Johannesburg and elsewhere. As pleased as we may be that so many students have achieved a university pass, the queues point to several crucial questions about our schooling system. Why are so many students so determined to gain access only to traditional university study? Given the sad truth that the majority of students entering university qualifications do not leave with a degree raises the question of whether and why these students are not aware of alternative courses of study? Are there not other places or courses from which students could obtain a quality education? 28 Jan 2011 Read more
