Stellenbosch University offers matrics the chance to improve NSC results

Students from educationally disadvantaged backgrounds have the opportunity to improve their NSC marks in Mathematics, Physical Science or Accounting, through Stellenbosch University's 2020 SciMathUS admission - a year-long SU preparation programme managed by SUNCEP within the Faculty of Education.

“Most students who have written Grade 12 and didn’t obtain good marks, tend to think it is the end of their academic road, but SciMathUS offers a 100 students who are selected via a rigorous selection process to attend this fully-funded programme that then provides them with a second chance to qualify for higher education," explains Programme Manager, Nokwanda Siyengo.

Students can choose to follow the Science stream (Mathematics and Physical Science) or the Accounting stream (Mathematics and Accounting)

The programme is presented in English and Afrikaans and students attend class on weekdays. SciMathUS students live and study on the Stellenbosch Campus where they become part of the vibrant student community.

    Academic success

Students who attended the programme in 2019 again obtained very good results and had the opportunity to apply at any tertiary institution in South Africa. At the end of this programme, students sit for the NSC examination with the 2019 cohort: in Mathematics they achieved an average of 68.9%, Physical Science an average of 76.9% and Accounting an average of 69.7%.

To be considered for this university preparation programme a student needs to:

    • Have passed Grade 12 in 2019 or 2018
    • Have a minimum average of 60% excluding Life Orientation
    • Have obtained a minimum of 45% in Mathematics
    • Have obtained a minimum of 45% in Physical Science
    • Have obtained a minimum of 45% in Accounting
    • Have passed at least four of the group of subjects designated for university admission
    • Have obtained a minimum of 50% in English or Afrikaans

The closing date for applications is the 24 January 2020. Prospective students can access the online application at www.suncep.sun.ac.za/upp/scimathus or request a hard copy application at +27 (0)21 808 3032.
