The 29-year old Hart is a Rhodes University graduate whose career has taken him as far as New York and London, where he lived and worked for three years. On his return to South Africa, Hart accepted a chief copy-editing position at Elle, where he spent two years honing his skills under former editor Jacquie Myburgh Chemaly. When Elle's editorial department relocated to Cape Town, Hart accepted the managing editorship at Essentials under Danielle Weakley.

One promotion lead to the next and after proving his capabilities, Caxton has appointed its first male editor of the title.

Enthuses editorial director Frith Thomas, “We are thrilled for Darren - he has the passion and business acumen to take the brand to new heights. We have no doubt that he will excel at the helm of Essentials!”
