When recall system is sluggish, customers pay the price

As outsourcing grows, so does the number of product recalls - up by more than 50% in the last six years. What can be done to protect consumers? The best way to address faulty design or any other product flaw - and prevent a recall - is to insist on quality at every stage of the manufacturing process.

The recall of 1 million Simplicity and Graco cribs exposes flaws in the manufacturing process that go well beyond product design.

The voluntary recall was announced Friday by the Consumer Product Safety Commission after the cribs were linked to at least two infant deaths, seven non-fatal cases of infants being trapped and 55 other incidents in the cribs.
