Currently managing director AEL Mining Services (AELMS) and executive member of AECI, Venter would also join Afrox's board as director. His appointment as managing director is effective from May 18.

Venter, 48, succeeds Brett Kimber, who resigned as managing director of Afrox after three years with the company.

"In Schalk Venter, I believe we have the right mix of management and leadership skills and experience to enable Afrox to realise its plans to rightsize the group to reflect current market conditions and bring a greater focus to meeting the needs of our customers in these tough economic times," said Mike Huggon, Afrox chairman.

"He has successfully led a number of high performing businesses and has wide experience of working successfully in a business transformation environment. Afrox is currently undergoing a major restructure to reduce fixed costs and raise margins and the Board feels Schalk can and will rapidly deliver a business that is structured for sustainable growth," Huggon said.

Afrox operates in South Africa and in 15 other countries in Africa.
