Samsa's development programme tackles maritime skills shortage

According to Sowetan Live, less than 2,400 of the world's 1.5-million seafarers are South Africans. The SA Maritime Safety Authority (Samsa) introduced a skills development programme to address South Africa's maritime industry skills shortage.

The programme helps learners who aspire to follow a career in the maritime field to acquire the skills they require, executive head of Samsa's Centre for Maritime excellence Sindiswa Nhlumayo said.

In addition, 32 cadets from Cape Town embarked on marine research on a dedicated training vessel donated to Samsa by the Department of Environmental Affairs. Fifteen more cadets will later board the vessel in Durban, says Sowetan Live The vessel was unveiled last week at the opening of the SA Maritime Industry Conference in Cape Town.

10 maritime high schools will be established in the next five years in different provinces, and maritime studies at basic education level were also planned. Next, Sowetan Live reports, Samsa will focus on Further Education and Training (FET) colleges.
