Volume of goods transported by land decreases 3.2% in 2015

The volume of goods transported (payload) decreased 3.2% in 2015 compared with 2014. The corresponding income decreased 1.4% over the same period, Stats SA data released on Monday show.

In December 2015, the volume of goods transported (payload) decreased 2.3% year on year (y/y). The corresponding income decreased 0.1% over the same period.

Income from freight transportation decreased 2.5% in the fourth quarter of 2015 compared with the fourth quarter of 2014. The main contributor to this decrease was primary mining and quarrying products (-9.4% and contributing -3.2 percentage points).

Passenger transportation

The number of passenger journeys decreased 6.8% in 2015 compared with 2014. The corresponding income increased 1.4% over the same period. In December 2015, the number of passenger journeys decreased 13.3% y/y. The corresponding income increased 1.4% over the same period.
