Gauteng's growth plans unveiled

Gauteng's plans for the current year include splitting the Health and Social Development Departments, creating more jobs and further cementing its position as Africa's business destination and economic hub.

In her State of the Province address - due to be broadcast live by Radio 702 but cancelled as the speech was delayed for two hours - Premier Nomvula Mokonyane told the media that several 'mega-projects' will be undertaken. These include:
• Separating the Health and Social Development departments;
• Creating a "smart city" as Nasrec;
• Establishing a climate innovation centre;
• Building the Gauteng Automotive Training Academy in partnership with Nissan;
• Boosting the Gauteng Growth and Development Agency;
• Establishing township development hubs.

The township hubs will comprise the following clusters:
• An automotive cluster to maintain, repair and sell parts for vehicles;
• A services cluster will provide a range of services from hair styling to laundry services;
• A light manufacturing cluster to make furniture, cleaning chemicals, clothing, textiles and fast-moving consumer goods;
