Gauteng drivers should register for e-tags now to avoid the rush when e-tolling begins, the SA National Roads Agency Ltd (Sanral) said on Tuesday, 8 October.
Beat the rush for e-tags urges Sanral

"To avoid a last-minute rush of motorists getting e-tags ahead of toll commencement, we are encouraging motorists to register and obtain their e-tags now," spokesman Vusi Mona said in a statement.

Those who had tags fitted to their vehicles would receive automatic discounts of up to 48%.

On Monday (7 October), Sanral's chief executive Nazir Ali said 600,000 e-toll tags were in circulation.

Last month, President Jacob Zuma signed into law the Transport Laws and Related Matters Amendment Bill, giving Sanral the right to start e-tolling on Gauteng's freeways.

Last week the SABC reported that government intended to publicise the proposed e-toll tariffs this week, with a view to implementing them by the end of November.

The Supreme Court of Appeal reserved judgment last month on a legal challenge to e-tolls by lobby group Opposition to Urban Tolling Alliance.

Mona said it was quick and simple to register for an e-tag. Motorists could do so at Sanral outlets and participating Checkers, CNA, Pick 'n Pay, Shoprite, and Spar shops, at www.sanral.co.za or by phone, or fax.
