"And the devil hates fat kids" - Apollo Artist Agency launch

Muso power players Brendan Sterley and the Fourie brothers: Dawid, Henk and Janneman have combined forces to bring you the Apollo Artists Agency. If their launch was anything to go by at Mercury last Thursday, it seems like these guys are onto a good thing.

"The goal of Apollo Artist Agency is to create a structure where new or existing artists and bands can slot into an environment where Apollo handles the daily business, marketing, and logistical tasks required to help create and support a successful brand. In this way the artist can focus on their artistic expression and reap the benefits of a creatively structured management agency."

Showcasing some of their diverse signed artists, including: Stepdog, PH Fat, Van Coke Kartel, SFR, Hyphen and PSYDSTE, the launch delivered on its stated promise to bring us "The Future Sounds of SA". These media-type launches can often be a bit hit and miss, but plus-one and I were pleasantly surprised by the talent and tightness on offer.

The beardy Stepdog's warmed up the crowd with their brand of bluesy, Kings of Leon-esque ramblings, proving that band names can be deceiving as I must admit the name Stepdog did not initially get my heart a thumping, but luckily the band sounded nothing like their name. Followed by the well-received spastic Smooth Mike from the PH Fat trio. The rest of the group later joined him for some wild animalistic (Animals, animals, we love animals!) partying. Flip, those guys were good, super energy-packed and lyrically firing bombs a many.

Van Coke Kartel had a tough act to follow after the slick spitters, so just as well they brought their "A game" with them and played a combo of old and new tracks with gusto.

DJ's SFR and Hyphen had specially whipped up a dancy remix of Van Coke Kartel`s Ondier Kom, which they let loose on the somewhat dwindled Mercury crowd straight after the VCK set.

Making a point of leaving the party on a high note, we decided to call it a night (it was a school night after all) after SFR and Hyphen had done their thing, glad to be introduced to and reminded of some hot acts.
