Railoun in fine form at swim challenge

Abdul Malick Railoun has won the 1,500m swim event at the Time Freight Heia Safari Swim Challenge that took place at the Heia Safari Ranch near Johannesburg on 26 and 27 October. Railoun was in a class of his own and led from the start to record an outstanding victory in a fast 18:04 to show that he is in fine form to get his open water swimming season off on a high note.

Railoun was chased home by Pietermaritzburg's Kerry Hunter who also enjoyed an outstanding weekend, winning the women's section of the 1 500m event by a huge margin, finishing in 19:36 to edge out Christiaan Jacobsz who took third overall in 20:23. Hunter had earlier in the day won the 800m event overall in a fast 10:39, beating Jacobsz by seven seconds after an excellent finish.

Oldest finisher

The 3km event on Saturday proved successful with Oostewald van Niekerk the man to lead home the field with a 40:20 swim, opening a gap of 19 seconds on Hunter on the third 1km lap as she opened her weekend with a second place overall. Jacobsz was third with a 41:15 swim.

The oldest finisher on the weekend went to 74 year-old Jimmy Mould who completed the 1 500m course in an encouraging 38:25.
"It is great to see such good results at Gauteng's cleanest dam and congratulations to all competitors that took part. We look forward to the next event on 17 November and ultimately the Midmar Mile in February 2014," said Etienne van Ravesteyn, CEO of Time Freight, the event's main sponsor.

The next Time Freight Heia Safari Swim Challenge takes place on Sunday, 17 November with distances of 5km and 10km being contested.
