#WeeklyWineWrap: Scientists invent a machine that makes wine non-stop

This week we take a look at the machine that makes wine non-stop; happily note that the fine wine market soared in June; check in with VinPro on their scholarship programme; and look forward to the fabulous wine-related events that will take place at the Juliet Cullinan Standard Bank Wine Festival in Hyde Park this week.

Scientists have invented a machine that makes wine non-stop

The gist of it: An American professor, working in collaboration with EPFL, is developing a miniature device for producing wine non-stop and testing different fermentation processes. The device is being designed for wine experts and winemakers, who will use it to identify the best yeast and the right fermentation temperature. The device, which an EPFL team will also work on, is capable of producing wine non-stop at the rate of one milliliter per hour. It will be used for testing fermentation processes. This innovative approach has already attracted the attention of schools like the Changins School in Switzerland, one of the top winemaking schools worldwide. Read more here.

The fine wine market soared in June

The gist of it: The fine wine market seems to be alive and kicking despite the economic pressures felt the world over. The Liv-ex Fine Wine 1000, which tracks a broad selection of fine wines, rose 3.4% last month. With the Fine Wine 100 rising 2.1% in June, the Fine Wine 1000 went rather better with a gain of over 3%, the “largest positive move since May 2007” according to Liv-ex, while the last time the index was at a similar level was September 2011.
