Stem van Afrika uses ABC Ulwazi to develop new station in Gauteng

Stem van Afrika Foundation commissioned ABC Ulwazi to develop a community radio station that would offer training to disabled broadcasters, a wide range of programming on disability and health issues and be partly staffed by disabled broadcasters.

A new community radio station serving the widely scattered informal Orange Farm settlement, south of Johannesburg, has been identified as the partner in this project. This will be a first for Africa. Equipment manufacturers are developing specially adapted studio desks with Braille indicators, and raised levels to allow for wheelchairs. The station itself is being designed to incorporate features such as wheelchair ramps and water features for the blind with different tones to indicate where the different sections of the station are located.

The station is currently waiting for the ICASA license hearing outcome before proceeding further.
