Chicken chain takes breasts off the menu

Chicken chain Nando's has pulled a provocative television advert after images of bare-breasted women ruffled feathers.

Nando's tongue-in cheek World Cup campaign played on stereotypes some tourists believe to be true of South Africa, in this case that women walk around half-naked.

The advert features comedian Chris Forrest - in traditional African attire - urging his "Sisters of Mzansi" and "Nubian queens" - shown on city streets - to take off their tops "for our visitors".

The women in the ad are topless, their breasts shown out of focus.

The fast-food chain pulled the cheeky ad after a complaint was lodged with the Advertising Standards Authority.

According to the complaint, the commercial used women for the "visual pleasure of men" and "nudity during family time viewing is inappropriate".

Nando's marketing manager, Sepanta Bagherpour, said: "Our original plan was always to air it for around this length of time, and we believe that it had achieved the desired commercial and communication objectives."
