June food and beverages industry income up 10.8%

The total income generated by the food and beverages industry increased by 10.8% in June 2012 compared with June 2011‚ Statistics SA's food and beverages survey‚ released on Monday‚ showed.

The food and beverages survey is a monthly survey covering a sample of public and private enterprises involved in the preparation of meals and drinks for immediate consumption in SA. The purpose of the survey is to monitor trends in the food and beverages industry.

Positive annual growth rates were recorded for bar sales (14.6%) and food sales (10.9%). "Other income" for the sector decreased by 14.2% over the same period. Other income includes all income not earned from food sales or bar sales.

The main contributor to the annual growth rate of 10.8% in total income for June was takeaway and fast-food outlets (up 22.3% and contributing 6.4 percentage points)‚ followed by restaurants and coffee shops (5.6% and contributing 3.0 percentage points) and catering services (7.9% and contributing 1.3 percentage points).

The total income generated by the food and beverages industry increased by 8.3% in the second quarter compared with the second quarter of last year. Positive annual growth rates were recorded for bar sales (12.1%) and food sales (8.0%). "Other income" decreased by 3.4% over the same period.

The year-on-year increase of 8.3% in total income for the second quarter was driven by takeaway and fast-food outlets; and restaurants and coffee shops.
