SA is only Brics nation without maritime policy

SA was the only country in the Brics bloc that did not have a maritime policy or strategy and that owned no ships‚ Transport Minister Dipuo Peters noted in the annual report of her department.

The country paid about R34bn last year to other countries to carry its outbound and inbound cargo.

The minister said this deficiency would have to be addressed this year.

The report said the department was developing a set of policies to increase investment and economic participation in the sector.
