The event takes place on Sunday, 25 September, from 08:00. Bring the whole family and bring on the sunshine! Join us for a 5km walk and miles of smiles, and with entertainment and plenty of kids’ activities on the Piazza, you’re all sure to enjoy the fun under the sun.

The walk starts on Melrose Boulevard, continuing through the leafy suburb, across James and Ethel Gray Park and back to the Piazza. The first 1 500 entrants will each receive a medal.

The cost is R90 for adults, R50 for children under 12, and children under 2 get in free. Register through hospicewits.co.za. Walk numbers need to be collected on Saturday, 24 September, between 09h00 and 14h00 on The Square at Melrose Arch. The proceeds of this walk will go to assist both children and families to have a better future.

Joy Ruwodo, Marketing Manager of HospiceWits, says spring is nature’s way of saying, “Put a bounce in your step and smile!” And what better way to step into spring than by taking part in the Walking on Sunshine Spring Walk? “Our sincere thanks go to Melrose Arch, Classic FM and Mortimer Harvey, our pro bono marketing partner, for once again supporting our work of caring for those who need it most.”

HospiceWits maintains two in-patient units, one situated in Houghton and the other in Soweto, which provide care, comfort and support to patients and families affected by life-threatening illnesses. Ruwodo explains, “Not only do we provide care to meet the physical needs of our patients, we go beyond that to ensure that their emotional, spiritual and psychosocial needs are met through our multidisciplinary team.”

HospiceWits provides the same holistic care for the orphans and vulnerable children of patients in their Mapetla Day Care Centre, as well as their unique Paediatric Palliative Care Ward in Diepkloof.

Joe de Beer, Financial Director at Melrose Arch, believes that by taking one step at a time, everyone can make a positive difference. “Walking on Sunshine is a springboard to elevating quality of life through the Smile Foundation and HospiceWits. We are proud to be associated with this event and to provide a platform to do good, while coming together to celebrate spring in Joburg.”

The Smile Foundation is a South African NGO that assists children with any type of facial or other conditions to receive reconstructive surgery within South Africa. They help children who suffer from treatable facial anomalies such as cleft lip and palate, all burns, Moebius syndrome (facial paralysis) and other conditions.

“Sport is such a crucial element – anyone can train and walk together, and language is no barrier,” says Hedley Lewis, Executive Director of the Smile Foundation. “Uniting sport and assisting children to receive life-changing interventions gives all South Africans the opportunity to help enhance a child’s future, without even knowing the child. Thank you to Melrose Arch and South Africa for giving the Smile Foundation this opportunity.”

Every step can change a child’s life.
