Logistic growth in the Western Cape is key to rebuilding a platform for a depressed economy

South Africa needs to start regaining and rebuilding its identity and economy. The Western and Eastern Cape offer a good starting platform providing a solid foundation with good municipality management in their various micro-managed zones. The Western Cape, in particular, has been efficient and forward-thinking in its approach to developing and growing specific industries that are relevant in energy, IT, filming and other industry areas that are show promise for the necessary job creation we need.
Logistic growth in the Western Cape is key to rebuilding a platform for a depressed economy

‘The Cape’, as it is affectionately known, has marketed itself really well on the world stage and reaped the benefits in its growing tourism industry and attracted widespread interests in other prominent industries. The Western Cape has put its money where its mouth is and has backed up its mandate to the people with efficient service delivery and an astute understanding of what needs to be done to stimulate a very depressed mindset that has engulfed South Africa over the last 10 years. It has become a business powerhouse, not only in South Africa but also the rest of the African continent.

Western Cape’s industries of focus

Cape Town is a hub of the business processes outsourcing sector and has played a critical role in the burgeoning African industry. It has one of the fastest-growing BPO sectors offering services to a wide range of industries which include:

  • Banking, financial services and insurance
  • Legal process services
  • Healthcare

  • IT infrastructure and app development

Renewable energy

Africa’s renewable energy potential is beginning to be explored and the Western Cape is the hub of the industry. Home to some of the industry’s earliest renewable energy manufacturing and financing initiatives, the province offers huge potential in this area.

The Western Cape has a strong presence of renewable energy companies and is well-positioned as an active renewable energy region within Africa. Foreign investment in the region’s Greentech industry has so far amounted to more than R7bn. According to Relocation Africa, there are 64 IPP projects contributing almost 4,000MW of electricity capacity with wind farms contributing 52% of that renewable energy into the grid.

This is insignificant in comparison to the 46,000 capacity that Eskom has at its disposal but the government has after all stalled all initiatives and efforts by the City of Cape Town and the private consumer over the last 10 years. If current and new initiatives are encouraged with the many self-sufficient consumers willing to feed their excesses into the grid then the Western Cape (followed the Eastern Cape) can be at least self-sustaining as provinces.

Film and media

A popular African destination for local and overseas producers, Cape Town’s film industry continues to grow, with an increasing number of big-budget films being shot in the Cape region. The best natural light in the world, a diverse talent pool and a world of locations in one city through its divergent cultures and architecture, Cape Town is a popular location for film and television production.

Diversity of industry

The Western and Southern Cape offers abundant opportunity in a range of industries which include:

  • Digitech
  • Food and beverage
  • Clothing and textile
  • Electronics
  • Boat building
  • Tourism
  • Agriculture

The Eastern Cape

The Eastern Cape remains a manufacturing hub of South Africa. The motor manufacturing industry is a long-established one with top brands such as Mercedes Benz, Volkswagen and Isuzu all having plants in the region.

Other industries enjoying growth or in the process of establishment include:

  • Maritime
  • Pharmaceutical
  • Green/renewables
  • Agro-processing
  • Materials
  • Light manufacturing
  • Automotive
  • Petro-chemicals
  • Capital goods

South Africa, Western Cape and the Eastern Cape

South Africa offers a balance in lifestyle not easily matched. Its natural beauty, friendly people and sunny weather make the country a popular destination for casual tourists as well as temporary and permanent residents who fall in love with South Africa’s natural beauty.

The Western and Eastern Cape property relocations are specifically more active as a result of stable and well-managed municipalities and their outlook to creating an environment for their people to thrive. These basic but important influences are very important when families consider their home choices that in effect their own career opportunities but also their wellbeing of their kids and their environment in the more distant future.
