New ECD centre to uplift Gugulethu

Research shows that during the first 1,000 days of a child's life, their ability to learn, grow and thrive can be profoundly impacted by the level of care, nutrition and education they receive during this period. However, quality foundation-phase education is still one of the main challenges currently facing South Africa.

As such, the Cipla Foundation has rebuilt an early childhood development (ECD) centre in Barcelona, Gugulethu, which opened its new doors on Wednesday, 17 April 2019. This is the seventh ECD centre that Cipla has restored, and it will ensure that another community’s children have a healthy environment to learn, with access to qualified educators, facilitators, and two meals a day.

Speaking at the ribbon-cutting ceremony of the new ECD facility, Paul Miller, CEO of Cipla Medpro, said that this ECD centre is a beacon of hope for the community and that Cipla is excited to celebrate all that it offers to better the future of the community’s children.

The original ECD centre was first opened by Martha Makhura, 21 years ago, in a large abandoned shack that she bought and renovated with the help of her family and friends. The community supported her initiative and as demand grew, the shack that catered for 15 children soon housed 30 children.

Today, 127 children attend the ECD centre, and Makhura will continue to manage and run the upgraded centre. “Martha Makhura is a lady of action and we can see the impact that she has had on the community. She has touched the lives of over 3,000 children out of the kindness of her own heart with the aim to make a difference, not only for the young children, but also for the community as a whole,” says Miller.

“Initiatives like these really cement Cipla’s ethos of ‘Caring for Life’, and we look forward to working together to better even more lives in the future,” Miller concludes.
