Miles for Smiles, a Cipla Foundation initiative, invites all mountain bikers and runners to participate in the STBB4GOOD Twilight Run and MTB Challenge to raise funds for corrective cleft lip and palate surgery. The running and biking events will take place on 12 and 13 October 2018 respectively at the Overgaauw Wine Estate in Stellenbosch.

Miles for Smiles has been selected as the beneficiary for the event and it assists Operation Smile in creating awareness and raising funds for corrective surgery.

Cipla Foundation trustee and ambassador, David Grier, says considering World Smile Day on 5 October, driving awareness of the plight of children born with cleft lips or palates, should be at the top of everyone's mind. "One in every 700 children in Africa is born with a cleft palate or lip, and many babies born with this condition do not survive. Malnutrition, medical and psychological problems also compound the condition."

Having recently returned from the gruelling, extreme physical challenge of running 4031km along the entire length of the Great Wall of China in a single attempt, Grier states that the Cipla Foundation embraces any opportunity to further the cause of Miles for Smiles and Operation Smile.

"Last year we raised R450,000 for Miles for Smiles with the STBB4Good events, and we are excited to partner with them again to help change more lives, one smile at a time. We are committed to exceeding last year's fantastic number," Grier adds.

"National law firm STBB has been hosting the annual STBB4Good MTB Challenge and Twilight Run for the last eight years. We are proud to support the amazing work done by event beneficiaries, Miles for Smiles, Cipla Foundation and Operation Smile, and hope to make a substantial financial contribution again this year," says Maryna Botha, Director at STBB.

Spots for this unique event on picturesque trails are limited, so don't delay entering. The route for both events runs through vineyards, plantation roads, natural bush, single-tracks and ends with one of the country's longest floating bridges.

Grier and fellow athlete, Andrew Stuart, will also be leading a hike up Table Mountain on World Smile Day (Friday, 5 October), to raise funds for Operation Smile. "The hike will be great preparation for those who plan to participate in the STBB4Good events. We invite everyone to join us at Platteklip Gorge at the foot of Table Mountain at 6am on World Smile day," Grier says. For more details about the event, visit
