The importance of teaching about climate change

The benefits of having clean water, land, and air are very important for all people around the world. It is important for people to learn about clean energy, green practices, and reduced resource use for us to continue to enjoy these invaluable resources for generations. Teaching about climate change should be a top priority in schools at all grade levels. Unfortunately, most people do not actually know that much about what is happening or what is at stake.
How the world is changing and the impact change has on human health cannot be diminished. Fortunately, we’re seeing more interest in the subject including more people wanting to obtain an online Masters of Natural Resources. However, adding climate change-related subjects in schools is not as easy as you may think.

Where should climate change education be added?

This is currently debated but most specialists believe that climate change should be added to middle school and high school. Students aged between 11 and 18 are already beginning to learn about health, biology, and earth science. Climate change is a natural addition to these subjects.

All climate change education should be to the point. It should never be overbearing. This is because many students are now exposed to climate change in their daily lives and conversations at home and with friends. Teachers can simply add to the knowledge students already gained from other sources until the class started.

The problem

One problem with climate education is the topic keeps changing as time passes. New technology is developed and creating a consistent curriculum for regular classes is hard to do. In most countries around the world there is a need to have at least a textbook available for the students. A textbook that would be offered this year may be in large part obsolete next year.

The solution to the common problem is exactly what was mentioned above. Teachers can continue gathering information and can adapt to the knowledge the class has at the moment the course starts. A focus is put on best practices and the current state of climate change.

What can students learn?

This is the most important question that appears when deciding whether or not a new subject would be added to a school or university’s curriculum. In many cases it is difficult to see if climate change education will make a true difference. For instance, greenhouse gas emissions still rise in spite of technology advancements and awareness.

One of the important things that students must learn about is the way in which climate change impacts human health. For instance, teachers can highlight that malaria appeared in new regions, super-storms are increasing in severity, heat waves are appearing around the world, floods are more devastating, and food security is under threat. All of these and many other topics can be taught in order to highlight the importance of dealing with climate change.

Conclusions

Climate change education is not accepted in most parts of the world. However, it is something that should at least be considered since this is a topic that has an impact on the lives of all people.
