Heart 104.9FM relaunches

Cape Town radio station, Heart 104.9FM officially re-launched today with four on-air acts of goodwill in the Cape Town community.
In line with our name-change from P4 104.9FM to Heart 104.9FM, Groote Schuur Hospital's cardiac unit was the obvious choice to benefit, receiving R10 490 to go towards buying an echo-cardiogram machine. The unit is used for screening tests for defects of the cardiovascular system, one of South Africa's biggest killers. The total amount needed by the hospital to buy this specialised heart equipment is R1 million, with Heart 104.9FM pledging to try raise enough funds to ensure the unit can achieve this.

Another hospital close to our heart, The Red Cross Children's Hospital, received 100 toys for the little ones recovering in the surgery and oncology units. This extraordinary hospital also turns 50 this year and is the only specialist hospital dedicated entirely to children in sub-Saharan Africa. Popular weekday presenter, Koketso Sachane, signed autographs and handed out the toys to the brave kids at the hospital.

St Luke's Hospice enjoyed the company of Heart 104.9FM personalities, who treated the patients to cake and tea.

And The Haven Night Shelter in the heart of the city enjoyed a braai, where up to 90 people, more used to soup and bread for their dinner, were fed a hearty meal. The Night Shelter spokesperson says that donations are always greatly appreciated as it's often very difficult to feed Cape Town's homeless, given their lack of funding.

Says Gavin Meiring, CEO of the station: "As a radio station that belongs to The Mother City, we feel it apt to show our heart and commitment to all the people of Cape Town. From the sick and vulnerable, to the elderly and less fortunate, it is heart-warming to be able to put our money and time into such worthy projects. To have our new refreshed look of the station, attached to such goodwill is very exciting."

Why rip off the name?-
The station's relaunch seems to comprise entirely of a handful of DJ changes and the name. Why is it then that they had to use an exisiting name? Heart 104.9 is a great station in the UK and I find it strange that they would base their "new" look on an existing name. Did they think that no-one would notice?

Sigh
Why rip off the name?-
Did you ever stop to think that a large part of Cape Town has never crossed any borders and been off South African soil? Who on earth cares that there's a radio station somewhere in the UK with the same name? It's not as if the majority of listeners would have known that - or been bothered even if they did.

it's not about the name-
it's not really about the name; it's about the lack of originality. new name? let's choose one from an existing station in the UK new DJ's? let's just swop 2 of them around and bring back some people who used to work here before new music? we'll just stick with what we know and let other stations break the new stuff new look? not exactly earth-shattering is it new website? somebody remind them to update it from time to time it's not only P4/Heart/Yawn fm that is guilty of this; radio used to be a place where cutting edge stuff happened, taboos were shattered, hoy cows slaughtered and the collective consciousness shaken up. now it's just a boring alternative to CDs. can it get any blander?
