Saskia Falken and toddler Ella St. Claire as they kick off the Mommy and Me Walk in Canal Walk
Already in its third year the Mommy and Me Walk, in association with Toys R Us, Canal Walk and People's Post, last year raised more than R25 000 for the St Joseph's Home and the Canal Walk Foundation. Over and above funds raised, the moms collected a huge bag of toys for the needy.
"It was great to be part of another successful Mommy and Me Walk and every year it amazes me how this initiative continues to grow not only in numbers but also in support from the community and sponsors. It was also great to how support from dads and grandparents have grown," says Saskia. She continues by saying that she is truly proud to be associated with an initiative that is both fun and that gives back to the community.
This year's funds will once again go to one of the Canal Walk Foundation's charities as well as the AIDS/HIV Sunflower Unit at St Josephs Home in Montana, Cape Town. The St Josephs Home is a home for children with chronic medical conditions who require ongoing nursing and rehabilitative care.
Jan Hansby, a mom of three from Kraaifontein walked away with first prize including a mid-week getaway for her and her family at a nature reserve in the Western Cape along with a family Wild card as well as a R1000 Yardley hamper. It had been the second time she had joined in the Mommy and Me Walk at Canal Walk. "I thoroughly enjoy the Mommy and Me Walk because it is a fun event that involves the whole family. I am also very excited about winning first prize especially as I have not won anything before," says Jan.
Moms were spoiled with a pampering goodie bag on arrival and when finishing the crossing line kids were kept entertained with clowns and face-painting and got the opportunity to be photographed with CBeebies' Fimbles characters from DStv Channel 306.
