Cape Town Mayor hosts her own show on Heart 104.9

In a first for radio in South Africa, Cape Town's Mayor, Helen Zille, will be hosting her own slot on popular Cape-based radio station, Heart 104.9.
On the last Monday of every month between 18h00 and 18h30 on Natalie Becker's show "Street Life", the Mayor of the city will be talking about issues that affect Capetonians. She'll be personally taking calls from listeners, who now have direct access to the person who has promised to work for you!

The show kicks off on Monday, 31st July, with residents of Cape Town encouraged to voice their concerns about issues that affect them.

Says Gavin Meiring, MD of Heart 104.9: "We got the idea after hearing about British Prime Minister Tony Blair presenting his own show on LBC in London which was a huge hit. Instead of being a guest on the show we hand the reins over to the Mayor to present and interact with the listeners on a one on one level, which is what radio is all about."

Hellen Zille-
Tokyo Sexwale also had his own talk show on radio 702 in 1996.Therefore Helen Zille's adventure is not the first.

Zille
yippe, not-
Who cares if she has her own show? The station that she chose to host this show is a huge indication of her target audience. Shame we are not excited and wont be tuning in anyway. This is nothing but a populist campaign which is going to further strain the already weak alliance to rules Cape Town. It is sad that the DA has over the years ruled the Cape through alliances which collapses before they even develop a strategy.

Former Gauteng Premier did it first...-
A few years ago the then Premier of Gauteng Tokyo Sekwale also hosted his own show - on 702 - it seem that Heart FM cannot be original. First it took a name from a popular radio station in the USA, then it takes an idea a popular talk station in London. What next.... Anyway, why the hell would you entrench the DA. And to think Kagiso Media runs Heart!!!

Wow-
Firstly I'd like to point out that the article DOES mention that Heart is not the first to do this kind of thing. Secondly, as far as I can tell, the show will be about the Mayor of Cape Town and if she is delivering in her mandate. Is the City working for U? And lastly, did u know that most of the "original" ideas used by radio stations in the country, are pouched from community radio...?

Great idea-
I think its an absolute great idea, and wish HEART 104.9 all the best. However people need to understand that this show is not a political show, its not about Hellen Zille its about the Mayor of Cape Town and how the Mayor of Cape Town can help our community. Good luck and all the best!

BombaySmith - what a shocxer of an ad.-
Did anyone see that NASTY cereal ad - with the spelling error in it a few weeks ago in The Saturday Argus. Great new station name, great new logo - SHOCKING ADVERTISING!

Nice idea, but could turn into political mouthpiece-
If an ANC mayor was given a slot on an SABC-owned station, like Good Hope or SAFM, there would be wailing and whining about the loss of media independence. This could very easily turn into a mouthpiece for more DA moaning, instead of contructive input. I hope I'm proved wrong, but politicans are politicians, no matter what party they belong to.

Great Idea-
This is a super idea - quite often politicians are just faces we see on TV that we never interact with. This is a step in the right direction. Let's hope other political leaders do the same.
