Heart 104.9 Mini-World Cup 2006

Sunday 2nd of July 2006 saw the inaugural Heart 104.9 Mini-World Cup 2006 kick off at the Claremont indoor arena at Stadium on Main.
What a tournament it turned out to be, with some of Cape Town's most talented players on show, including Marawan Bantam, Thembile Konono, Giovanni Rector, Peter Philander and Jerome McCarthy.

As with the traditional World Cup format, the first stage of the competition was made up of a round robin series within the groups, the top four from each group were then pitted against each other in a knockout phase, vying for the R20 000 worth of prizes.

Hundreds of fans turned out to cheer the sides, kitted out in country colours, in the full-blooded and tightly contested fixtures.

Two matches encapsulated the spirit of the Mini World Cup, both featuring the eventual winners 'Italy'... In the knockout stage, they came up against 'Croatia' (made up of Santos PSL players) who had been banging 10 to 15 goals without reply against previous opponents. The 'Italians' fought tooth and nail in a nail-biting match that needed extra time, eventually winning 3-2, sending the crowd into deafening celebration, as the dejected 'Croatians' left the arena (after five minutes of complaining to the ref!). Then the final, where 'Argentina' took on the seemingly unstoppable Italians. The 10 minutes each way was filled with great skill and sportsmanship, the players really showing how 'action soccer' should be played. Italy eventually squeezing the win with a well taken penalty to lift the trophy.

Devon from 'Italy' was Player of the tournament.

Giovanni Rector from 'Argentina' was Top Goalscorer.

Marlon Johnson from 'Italy' was Goalkeeper of the Tournament.
