Here's to some smashing startups!

DEMO Africa last week selected the top 40 entrepreneurs to launch at this year's conference, taking place in Lagos, Nigeria, from 22-26 September. Out of more than 400 initial applications, and 242 shortlisted ventures, these 40 obviously impressed! Well done! In 2000, Rwanda began to relentlessly develop its ICT sector after it adopted the National Information Communications Infrastructure (NICI) policy and created a long-term plan to achieve full digitisation in four five-year stages. Africa Renewal's Nirit Ben-Ari delves further into why Rwanda's ICT success story is grabbing global attention. In other news over the past week, Ericsson has estimated the m-commerce market to reach $800bn worldwide by 2016; and advertising and communications services company, ScanGroup, has announced that it will be acquiring majority stake in Experiential Marketing (Proprietary) Limited (EMPL), a South African marketing company, as it aims to expand its African footprint. Douglas Kruger gives some great pointers on how to sell out your book in two months flat and Charles Mburugu elaborates on WordPress plugins for user-generated content. Have a great week! Cheers! Ilse van den Berg, Editor: Marketing & Media Africa (@Biz_Africa) PS. If you missed last week's Biz Takeouts show, make sure you listen to the podcast which is now available.
