The Egyptian government has released a prominent political blogger who spent four years in prison for insulting Islam and defaming President Hosni Mubarak.
The BBC reported that supporters of Abdel Kareem Nabil Soliman, often known as Kareem Amer, claimed he was beaten up by security officers before being freed from a jail in Alexandria on Tuesday, 16 November 2010.
He was convicted for posting blogs in which he called Mr Mubarak a "dictator" and allegedly incited hatred of Islam. Soliman was the first citizen in Egypt to be jailed specifically for online writing, according to the BBC.
