New product allows internet access via text message

A new web-based product developed in India could soon offer internet access via text messages and voice commands to users of low-end mobile phones. UK newspaper The Guardian reported on Thursday (15 July 2010) that SiteOnMobile is currently being tested by three companies.

The product was developed by Hewlett-Packard's (HP) research division in India to simplify web access for more than 50 percent of the country's mobile users who own phones with just voice and text messaging capabilities. The system uses web-based servers to allow website owners to create simple applications that could potentially expand their reach from 60 million registered internet users in India to more than 600 million mobile phone users, according to the report in The Guardian.
