Hellas Sat provides Gateway with Ku-band capacity

LONDON: Gateway Communications, a leading provider of African telecommunications services, has signed a deal with Hellas Sat which will provide an additional 36 meg of capacity over Southern Africa. Hellas Sat, the owner and operator of the Hellas-Sat 2 satellite, located at 39° East, will provide Gateway with Ku-band capacity.

Gateway selected the Hellas-Sat 2 because it offered a powerful beam over southern Africa; because of its stability and immediate availability. With a strong beam with a long life-cycle, Gateway expects to be using Hellas-Sat 2 for years to come.

“Gateway Communications will continue to invest in satellite services over Africa to guarantee our customers have secure, high quality capacity for the future,” said Peter Gbedemah, CEO of Gateway Communications. “The additional capacity from Hellas-Sat 2 will serve our growing base of business service customers in Southern Africa, reaching from the Africa's southernmost tip up to north of Zambia. While we are seeing growth across the continent, we are pleased to start working with Hellas Sat in a key geography, to ensure our footprint follows our customers.”

“We are very pleased to start our co-operation with Gateway, further enriching our customer portfolio already including leading service providers in Europe, Middle East and Africa that have chosen our company for providing DTH, broadcasting, as well as data communications services. We are confident that this is only the start and we look forward to a stronger and long term co-operation,” said Thanos Papadopoulos, sales and marketing director, Hellas Sat.

Gateway Communications has more than 1200 customers across 40 countries in Africa, and is the largest single user of satellite capacity over Africa. The Hellas-Sat 2, which was launched in May 2003, is helping Hellas Sat develop a market presence in South Africa, where it has positioned one of its steerable beams.
