Shoprite Checkers/SABC2 Women of the Year Award

As South Africa celebrates a decade of democracy, the search for South Africa's most outstanding women of the year in 2004 has been announced in Johannesburg this week. They will receive South Africa's most prestigious award for women, the Shoprite Checkers/SABC 2 Women of the Year Award.

As the first major initiative for National Women's Day the Shoprite Checkers/SABC 2 Women of the Year Award has led to the rise of many new Awards and initiatives honouring South African women who have not only achieved success in their own respective fields but who have also made a difference in communities and inspired others to follow.

The 2004 Award is a prominent reminder of the distance that the women of South Africa have traveled over these 10 years in order to reach their goals and make a difference within their communities.

This year the Award will grow to include a ninth category while for the first time in its history the Award will not announce an overall winner. The premier accolade for achievement by women will change in title to honour nine winners in nine categories.

These outstanding women will share the Shoprite Checkers / SABC 2 Women of the Year Award. In 2003 the Science & Technology category was introduced and this year the Award has grown to embrace a ninth category, that of Social Services.

The other categories of the Award are: arts & culture, business entrepreneurs, community affairs, education, health, media & communications and sport. South Africans have been urged to submit nominations in any of the nine categories.

Each of the nine category winners of the Shoprite Checkers / SABC 2 Women of the Year will receive R10 000 in prize money. South African Airways will for the fourth consecutive year be the official carrier of the Shoprite Checkers / SABC 2 Women of the Year Award.

The closing date for entries is Friday, 21 May 2004 and nomination forms are available from Shoprite or Checkers stores, via the Internet at www.sawoman.co.za or by contacting the organisers at (011) 465 5225, or by e-mail: sawoman@calibro.co.za

After an extensive nationwide search campaign, the Award culminates in a spectacular gala ceremony on Thursday, 29 July 2004 in the Mother City to announce the winners. This dazzling event will be broadcast by SABC 2 on Monday, 9 August 2004 – National Women's Day.
