    Tighter budgets boost creativity
Andy Morahan, director at Bikini Films and Foreman of the Music Video category at D&AD 2012 said: "This has been a great year in the Music Video category at D&AD. A lack of funds in this industry has, ironically, meant a great upsurge in creative thinking and that's been reflected in the work that I've seen this year: it seems that, as budgets have shrunk, creativity has improved.

"The YouTube effect was also in evidence as a stand-out idea has never been more important for today's music video producers and directors and to capture the attention of a more sophisticated - and probably cynical - audience.

"Those things, combined with ever-greater availability of the tools of production has democratised the discipline and made it accessible for a new generation of talent and that can only be a good thing for the craft."

Tim Lindsay, chief executive of D&AD added: "While advancing technology has made many of the industries we judge less accessible for new, young talent, in the music video category the opposite has been the case. The work we've seen this year has been fresher, more exciting and in some cases more off-the-wall than in many others and that has been driven by an industry where the costs of production have fallen and the quality of ideas has necessarily had to rise. These are exciting times in the music promo world and D&AD is fortunate to be able to see - and reward - the best of the resulting work."

    Glossary:

D&AD Awards are almost unique in that, if the jurors do not judge a piece of work to be worthy of an In-book, a Nomination or Yellow Pencil in a category, no award for that category is given: jurors are not obliged to award any of the work that see if projects do not meet D&AD's judging criteria.

In-Book: Refers to work that will be included in the Fiftieth D&AD Annual which will be published in September 2012.
Nominations: Refers to work that will be included in the D&AD Annual and is also being considered by the Jury for the award of a Yellow Pencil, one of the most prestigious awards for creativity anywhere in the world. The Yellow Pencil results will be announced at an event in London on Thursday, 19 April 2011.
Yellow Pencils: Awarded to the work that is judged to be the best in the world, selected from projects that receive a Nomination during judging. The Yellow Pencils are one of the most-recognised and coveted awards for creativity anywhere in the world.
Black Pencils: Awarded to work that is not just considered the best in the world in its category, but for pieces of design or advertising
