Making a positive impact in communities

Sykry Hassim, general manager of Engen’s South Durban-based refinery, attributed “the company’s caring spirit” as the driver for it to step up and take proactive measures to assist vulnerable families who were impacted by last month’s unrest.

“We truly care for those impacted and we hope our gesture brings some relief to vulnerable households,” Hassim said.

Various community leaders thanked Engen and Imbumba Foundation for making a positive difference within their communities.

Pastor David Usher, speaking on behalf of the Merewent Community Crime Prevention Association commented: “The content of the hampers was substantial and well received by our community. They were distributed to NGOs, places of safety, homes for the vulnerable and to the general public.”

Engen has numerous community outreach initiatives aimed at uplifting and empowering South Durban and KZN residents, including the Engen Maths and Science Schools as well as the Engen Computer School.

Hassim said Engen is both “proud and humbled to play a role in changing lives”, particularly in communities close to its operations.
