The Citroën C5 Aircross is smooth and silent

Thoroughly impressive. Smooth and silent with an equally satisfying ride. These are the early impressions I got when I received the SUV for a week for testing.

The brand continues its international SUV offensive. With its classical SUV-shape, large 720mm diameter wheels, its robust and muscular design and its raised ground clearance of 230mm giving the vehicle that SUV presence. Its unique personality and strong style choices such as its Airbump inspired lower door and wheel arch protectors and roof bars, make it 100% Citroën in its design and character.

    Assert yourself

The new-generation SUV has a unique and assertive personality. The styling carries on the recent themes we’ve come to expect – split headlights squint from a widescreen grille and cartoonish lines abound. Black A-, B- and C- pillars are designed to create the effect of wraparound glazing and try to make the new C5 Aircross wider and sleeker. N

The new C5 Aircross SUV is the most comfortable model in its segment, thanks to the Citroën Advanced Comfort programme, Progressive Hydraulic Cushions suspension and Advanced Comfort seats. Hydraulic buffers at either end of the suspension setup have all but eliminated bounce from the car’s drive.

    Silent

The new Citroën C5 Aircross SUV is designed to provide advanced soundproofing with reduced road noise and wind noise thanks to double-glazed laminated front windows with an insulated layer, bringing its occupants exceptional, cocoon-like soundproofing.

Particular attention was paid to the soundproofing of the engine compartment, to such an extent that I had to turn off the radio and look at the rev counter dial to ensure that the engine was indeed switched off.

    Take 5

There’s space inside for five, with the variable boot size thanks to the three, individual sliding/reclining seats in the rear – it starts at 520 litres and expands to 720 litres. With the seats folded down, there’s a cavernous 1,630 litres of space to play with.

Citroen says it has aimed for maximum practicality, building in cubby holes and stowage spaces around the cabin. The modern and high-tech New C5 Aircross is equipped with driver assistance systems.

Citroen has included a whole raft of safety systems on the car, in order to make drivers and passengers feel as secure as possible. Tech-lovers are well catered for, with a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel behind the steering wheel and an 8-inch touchscreen on the dashboard covering the infotainment functions.

    Stand tall

New C5 Aircross SUV stands apart through its energetic and assertive personality. Measuring 4.50m long, the new model is robust, muscular and powerful.

Its flowing shape is punctuated with strong graphic touches such as the Airbump panels, large 720mm-diameter wheels, a ground clearance of 230mm and distinctive roof bars. The cabin gives an immediate impression of protection and space, with a large horizontal dashboard, enveloping seats, a road-dominating ride height, as well as a wide central console and the use of warm materials.

    Comfortable and modular

The C5 Aircross SUV excels through its comfort and spacious interior thanks to the Citroën Advanced Comfort programme. It features two major innovations: Citroën’s new suspension with Progressive Hydraulic Cushions and Advanced Comfort seats with their unrivalled ability to offer peerless ride comfort, the result being an outstanding experience for all passengers.

Emphasis has been placed on comfort, thanks to advanced new suspension and the firm’s ‘comfort seats’ which aim to replicate the feeling of sitting in an armchair by using different types of foam.

With its three full width individual rear seats, the C5 Aircross SUV stands apart in its segment. They provide the same level of comfort for the three passengers in row two. The seats fold down to provide a perfectly flat floor thanks to the dual-level boot floor. Citroën's C5 Aircross SUV also offers ample storage space, with its central armrest, its glove compartment, and its wide door pockets. It also boasts a large storage area at the front of the central console, equipped for wireless smartphone charging. (on the Shine model)

    Final thoughts

Citroën is attuned to its customers’ expectations: Inspired By You! The New C5 Aircross SUV is Citroën’s new flagship and a key lever for the growth of the brand in SA. There is little I could fault with this SUV that will challenge the market for its rightful place.
