South African first township BMX oval gets ICT facility

It's the MTN SA Foundation's mandate to connect communities and provide people with the tools to create a better life for themselves.

In so doing, the Foundation has partnered with the Velokhaya Life Cycling Academy to establish an ICT facility and upgrade South Africa's first township BMX oval in Khayelitsha.

Ever since it opened its doors in 2008, the oval has provided township children with a safe recreational space for after-school activities. It has become synonymous with inspiration and achievement; a facility where new sporting heroes, role models and talented individuals are developed and where the sport of BMX cycling has been made accessible to young South Africans, regardless of their race or socio-economic status.

According to Sipho Mona, GM of Velokhaya, "The MTN SA Foundation has agreed to fund the upgrading and equipping of an Information Technology Centre, as well as financial support to enable the procurement of BMX bicycles, safety equipment and cycling apparel."

The revamping of the oval - which will include Velokhaya's first computer centre - will benefit the broader Khayelitsha community as a whole with free and instant access to technology-based resources. The Centre will be equipped with modern workstations, a multi-functional printer and computers linked to the internet through wireless (Wi-Fi) connectivity subsidised by MTN SA. This will allow all learners and users access to educational content and learning materials. The MTN SA Foundation will also provide technical support and training at the centre.

Velokhaya's Life Cycling Academy (LCA) BMX programme offers a positive outlet for youth living in the area. Not only has it shown to improve their learning performance, but it encourages school attendance and a desire to succeed academically. Although the BMX programme has never had a dedicated programme sponsor, ongoing and loyal support from companies such as Pick n Pay, Safmarine, Anglo-V and the Pedal Power Association and others have kept the BMX programme's wheel's turning - and the achievements coming.

A number of the Velokhaya LCA's male BMX riders have consistently won medals at National BMX events and in 2010, phenomenal female BMX'er Anitha Zenani achieved a World Number 6 ranking in her age group.

According to Mona, "The BMX team is a very dedicated team, one which has always been committed to bringing back silverware to Velokhaya. This support from the MTN SA Foundation is set to propel this team to even greater heights."

"This sponsorship from the MTN SA Foundation will allow us to grow even more champions, both on and off the bike," concludes Mona.
