DoE, industry try to alleviate LPG shortages

Shortages of liquefied natural gas (LPG) are having a serious impact on the manufacturing, automotive and hospitality sectors of the economy, and the Department of Energy (DoE) and industry are working together to come up with solutions to alleviate the problem, reports Engineering News.

However, deputy-director general for hydrocarbons Tseliso Maqubela stressed that it was the industry's sole responsibility to ensure production in line with national needs and contractual obligations to their customers. The DoE, Maqubela said, was responsible for all energy policy issues.

Addressing the sitting of the Economic Development Select Committee in the presence of oil industry players, Maqubela spoke about the department's heightened concerns regarding the LPG shortage, as result of unplanned shutdowns of refineries, Engineering News reports. Kayagas CEO George Tatham, according to Engineering News, added that shipments of LPG would arrive in the Western Cape next week.
