The black-owned and controlled group‚ which develops products for the rail‚ mining‚ industrial and defence markets‚ had already designed a prototype display that had been "rigorously tested" on Transnet locomotives.

This comes after Transnet last month awarded R50bn worth of contracts to two Chinese and two North American railway groups to build 1‚064 electric and diesel locomotives as part of its R308bn market-demand strategy to 2019.

With the exception of 70‚ all locomotives would be built in Transnet Engineering's plants in Pretoria and Durban.

The displays will be manufactured in South Africa and fitted into Transnet's fleet of existing and new locomotives over the next five years.

Ansys' chief executive Teddy Daka said the company was focused on growing its order book.

"Our new strategy of securing longer-term contracts‚ with the potential of annuity income in the maintenance phase‚ is gaining traction‚" he said.

Fitment of the display had been subcontracted to businesses that were part of Ansys's enterprise development programme.

"Transnet and companies such as Ansys share a mutual commitment to localisation‚ rooted in the confidence that local companies have the capability to produce world-class products‚" Transnet Freight Rail's chief executive Siyabonga Gama said.

"We are satisfied that Ansys is the best choice for this contract," he added.
